06/12/2007
Reece is officially done with rehab and has began working back at
his shop. How bout that friends!!!!!!!!!
A Helping
Hand
Reece Good
On the road to recovery! |
 |
| It was a simple
“thumbs up” sign. But how significant it was to the
family of Reece Good, the Gardner, Kansas custom motorcycle
builder who was shot in the hand and head August 11 in
Kansas City, Kansas, a victim of a random act of violence.
He and two of his friends were returning from a six-day trip
to the motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. Good was
slowly coming out of a coma three weeks after the shooting.
Doctors were not sure if he would ever regain consciousness.
And if he did, they had no way of predicting the effects the
injury would have on Good’s ability to recover.
The family was prepared for the worst. They prayed for a
miracle. Good had been somewhat responsive. He occasionally
would squeeze a person’s hand on command. But there had
been nothing definitive, no clear indication of what life
would be like for him in the future.
“He would do certain things and we knew he was
improving,” Heath Good, Reece’s brother, said. “Doctors
told us it would be hard to determine how he would recover
until he came out of the coma.” Then one day Reece opened
his eyes. Nurses asked him if he knew who was standing at
the end of the bed. His hand slowly turned upward and his
thumb pointed up in the air. “The nurses started hollering
and telling everyone,” Joyce Murray, Reece’s mother,
said. “The day he did the ‘thumbs up,’ everyone knew
then that he was going to be OK.”
It was an emotional day then. It’s still emotional for
the family to talk about. “But,” Kim Good, Reece’s
sister-in-law, said, “we’ve gone from tears of sadness
to tears of joy. These are tears of joy.” There have been
a lot of tears caused by a myriad of emotions that has taken
Reece and his family on a difficult and painful journey
since August 11. Some are emotions never before experienced;
some are emotions they might struggle with the rest of their
lives.
When the shooting occurred, Reece’s sister Julie was
set to move to Pittsburg, Kansas, and attend Pittsburg State
University. “I was torn,” she said, tears welling in her
eyes. “I didn’t want to go to Pittsburg. I felt like I
was walking out on him.” Kim said the family urged her go
to Pittsburg. “Reece would have wanted to her go to school
rather than stay here,” she said. Julie said she knew
that, too, but that didn’t make leaving her brother any
easier. “It’s hard to study,” she said. “Because I
feel like I’m not able to be with my family when I’m
needed most. When he called me on the phone, I knew he was
going to be OK.”
Heath is the most vocal with his emotions. “When
something like this happens, you start to doubt whether
there are really good people out there,” he said. “I
mean, we don’t live in their (the people who shot Reece)
world. They don’t deserve to breathe the air we breathe.
“This is America. This isn’t a Third-World country. “But
then everyone in the community started coming forward . . .,”
he had to pause. “There were people at the hospital the
day it happened that beat me getting there. It’s hard to
begin to thank people for what they’ve done, not just the
people of Gardner, but all the way to Las Vegas, Texas,
Orange County Choppers, all the people who buy stuff from
Reece, there are a lot of people who put in a lot of time
and effort to help him. “And all we can do is say thank
you.”
There has been a barbecue;
several auctions, a car
and bike show , a bake sale, and a poker
run to raise money for the Reece Good Medical Expense
Fund. Reece and his family hope these events will continue
with proceeds going to help other people in need. “I would
like to see the money help people who have no control over
what has happened to them, whether it is a random act of
violence, cancer, or something else,” Joyce said. “The
money might benefit a 6-year-old child or a 40-year-old guy.
But this is one way we can give back to the community for
everything the people have done for us.”
Joyce said Kansas City, Kansas detectives have kept in
contact with the family and still are working on the case.
“They have had a few leads, but so far they have fallen
through,” she said. “There is a $15,000 reward; some day
they’ll get caught. They’ll do something else, and they’ll
get caught.”
If given the opportunity, Reece and his family were asked
what they would like to say to the shooter. Most couldn’t
answer. Reece didn’t have to think about it and answered
quickly. “They can burn in hell,” said Reece. Added Kim,
“They (the people who shot Reece) don’t understand how
it affects the lives of so many people. The family, and the
people who own businesses and did so much work on the
fund-raisers, that took time away from their businesses. “And
when I go somewhere, I’m on my guard every minute of the
day. I didn’t used to be like that.”
It was a convenience store on Kansas Avenue near I-635
where the three had stopped to take a quick break from the
road. It was just after 3 a.m. when the truck pulled back
onto Kansas Avenue and headed for I-635. A small car with
three young Hispanic males raced up to the driver’s side
of the truck. Five shots rang out going through the
windshield. Reece’s friend, who was driving the truck,
ducked down into the seat. There was another passenger
sleeping in the back seat. Reece, strapped into the
passenger’s seat belt, was shot in the left hand and in
the head. He was the only one hit by the gunfire. Doctors
have said it is too dangerous to attempt removing the bullet
and its fragments. Wayne Murray, Reece’s stepfather, said
he would never go to the place where Reece was shot. “I
just can’t do that,” he said. “I don’t want to go by
where it happened; I don’t think I ever will.” Reece,
though, said if given the chance, he would go to the place
where he was shot. “I might,” he said. “If one day I’m
out and about, I’ll go by there.”
Doctors think Reece will recover to around 90 percent of
his functions. He is now home but continues to undergo
therapy each day. Sometime within the next two months, he
will undergo another surgery to replace a portion of his
skull that was removed to help the brain heal. When that is
done, Reece no longer will have to wear a protective helmet
whenever he walks. “I want to finish the therapy,” said
Reece. “I go five days a week, seven to eight hours a day.
It’s tough. I have 11 weeks left and then I will go back
to the shop.”
He visits his Ultra Craft Customs motorcycle shop where
Ryan Olah continues to work. “I take care of the business
part of it,” said Heath. “But it’s Ryan who keeps the
shop going. Without him there, we couldn’t do it. He does
everything from talking to customers, to ordering parts, to
building handlebars, which we sell to a company in Las
Vegas. “And Joy comes back home and works on weekends.”
Although Reece has medical insurance, it will not fully
cover the enormous amount of medical bills associated with
his injuries. Donations to help pay for those expenses can
be made to: The Live to Ride Fund, c/o Reece Good, Gardner
National Bank, P.O. Box 429, Gardner, KS 66030.
Everyone said Thanksgiving would be something special
this year. “We’re going to go to my grandma’s in
Pleasanton,” Reece said. “She cooks a lot and it’s
good.” Everyone said the family was close before the
shooting, and that the incident has brought them even
closer. Since August 11, each has their own moment of
extreme joy.
Heath looks to the future. “I think the highest point
for us is yet to come,” said Heath. “Reece is a pretty
determined guy.” Joyce looks at her family, helps Reece
move from point to point, and through her tears of joy knows
she has plenty to be thankful for this holiday season. “We
feel like our prayers were answered,” said Joyce.

UPDATE: 3/15/2007
Wanted to let everyone know that Reece's surgery today went very
well. He went in about 11:30am and has just gotten out of surgery
and is in recovery right now. At this time I am not sure how long
he'll be in the hospital or any other particular details. Just
wanted to let everyone know that he made it through this just fine.
I'll update you when I know more.
Thanks! Kim
UPDATE ON REECE GOOD

UPDATE 3/12/07
Just wanted to let
everyone know that Reece will be going back in for surgery this
Thursday to have the artificial skull/plate put back on so that
he'll have something protecting his brain again. If everything goes
as planned he'll have to be in the hospital for 1-2 days and then
will be released to go home.
It's been 7 months now since the accident and Reece is still making
great progress towards recovery and is very optimistic and working
so hard to get better. They've cut his therapy down to 3 days a week
and he's been going to the "shop" on a regular basis--this
is also good therapy for him! The next step after this surgery is to
go see an eye specialist and see if they can do anything to fix some
of his vision problems. I'll send a message after the surgery is
over to let everyone know how he's doing.
Take care! The Good/Murray Family

Bike designer who was shot in the
head says thank you to supporters
November
9, 2006
KANSAS CITY,
Kan. – Motorcycle designer Reece Good is saying thank you
to everyone who has shown him support since a drive-by
shooting left him struggling for his life.
Good spoke on camera for the first time to NBC Action News
reporter Lisa Benson.
"I was
in a coma for a couple of months," said Good. "A
couple of months after it happened I didn't remember
anything."
But Good's family clearly remembers August 11. That day a
gunman opened fire on Good and two friends along Interstate
635 in Kansas City, Kan.
They were on their way home from a
Sturgis bike rally when someone shot at their truck. Good
was shot in the head, and spent the next two months in a
coma.
Now, Good is on the road to
recovery, and his focus is on his physical therapy.
"I've been at home a couple of
weeks, and now I'm going through outpatient rehab,"
said Good. "They're working with me walking and stuff
so I'm feeling pretty good considering what happened."
He and his family are thanking
those who have shown him so much love in his darkest hour.
"There are a lot of good
people out there, said Good's brother Heath. "A lot of
them came forward and just helped us when we needed it. The
support that he's gotten speaks for his work and the type of
person that he is."
Good's custom built motorcycles are
known throughout the country and recognized by major
television outlets as one of the best. And Good's brother
knows why.
"My brother's got more talent
in one hand that most people have in a life time," said
Heath.
Good said he is getting back to
using his talent and is looking forward to his next design.
"I got people that are working
for me, but I go out to my shop once a week at least."
Police have not made any arrests in
the case, and the reward money is now up to $15,000.
They are asking anyone with
information to call the TIPS Hotline: (816) 474-TIPS.

Update:
10/26/2006
Just wanted to let
everyone know that Reece was able to come home on Tuesday afternoon
this week. He had the day off from therapy yesterday so he had a
little chance to rest and get adjusted to being home. He had a nice
homecoming with signs throughout town, etc. I think he was really
ready to get back home.
He'll be in therapy from 8:30am - 4:30pm Mon.-Fri. every week. But I
am sure he'd still enjoy to have visitors at the house on the
weekends or evenings!
Just wanted to remind everyone that the 5k walk/run is this Sunday
if your interested. Registration is at Wheat Ridge Middle School in
Gardner. If the weather is nice Reece has asked us to take him there
for the event.
Thanks! The Good/Murray Family
Update:
10/17/2006
Reece is counting down the days until he gets
released from the hospital to come home!! The therapists are coming
out to the house on Friday to make sure we have things in order and
the necessary medical aids for Reece to be able to be at home and
still get around the house as needed.
As far as we know now Reece will be coming home on Tuesday, October
24th. He will still continue to go to therapy every day at a rehab
facility but will at least be able to be in the comfort of home
instead of in the hospital! He is getting stronger as every week
passes by.
I'll definitely send out another email when he is home!! Thanks
again for all your prayers and care for Reece. We couldn't have made
it thus far without all the support. The Good/Murray Family
Update: 10/08/2006
Oct. 7, 2006 I attended the Ride for Reece. WOW!!! What
a huge outpouring of support. I don't know what the final was
on the amount of bikes there, but it was huge. I took a ton of
pictures
for everyone to view.
The end to this event that no one would have thought could get any
better, was when a limo pulled up with Reece in it. He had a
huge smile on his face and was able to stay a visit with everyone
for quite a while.
Way to go Reece!! We will all still pray for your continued
improvement and the strength to work through your rehabilitation.

Update: 09/28/2006
I know it has been awhile since we've sent anything out on Reece and
his status. He has been in rehabilitation for three weeks now and is
doing really well. He is starting to stand on his own for brief
periods of time. They had him up yesterday walking on the treadmill
(with a harness of course) and he is getting around some with a
walker. He is regaining his strength more each day. They've removed
the feeding tube and he is eating pretty much whatever he likes now.
They are working him pretty hard in his therapy sessions and you can
tell just by the progress that he makes each day. His vision seems
to still be affected somewhat, but the doctor says that it seems to
be getting a little better as well. The doctor has mentioned that he
thinks that after continued therapy Reece will recover to 90%, which
is really good. His vision will be affected some, but he'll still be
able to drive, work, etc.
We see this truly as a miracle for Reece and our family. We
appreciate the continued support! The Good/Murray Family.
One of
the men shot leaving a motorcycle rally talks about the shooting
September 9,
2006
GARDNER, Kan. –
The man shot in the head on the way home from a Sturgis motorcycle
rally is still in the hospital recovering.
However, Reece Good’s friend, who wants
to go by Jeff, was driving the truck that night, and is now talking
about that horrifying experience.
Thirty-six-year-old Good, Jeff and another
friend just happened to stop at a gas station near Interstate 635.
Jeff said three men in a dark-colored Dodge
Neon pulled up and opened fire.
Bullets hit Jeff in his forearm and side.
Shots hit Good in the hand and head as he sat in the passenger seat.
Jeff rushed them all to a hospital.
Jeff says he prays for Good to recover
knowing both came inches from death.
"Besides it being a miracle that Reece
is alive, it's also a miracle I didn't sustain series injury or lose
my life," Jeff says.
Good is a nationally recognized
award-winning custom motorcycle builder.
The gunman is still on the loose and Jeff
is offering a $10,000 reward for that person’s capture and
conviction.

Friends Of Shooting
Victim Make Public Plea
POSTED: 9:58 am CDT September 10, 2006
UPDATED: 10:13 am CDT September 10, 2006
The Kansas City Channel .com
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- There is a new
plea to catch those responsible for a shooting that left a Kansas
City, Ks. man seriously injured in the early morning hours of August
11.
Reece Good was shot while riding in a car along with friends near
the Valero gas station on Kansas Avenue. Good and his friends were
on their way home from a motorcycle rally in Sturgis, S.D.
Friends of Good tell KMBC that he is making slow improvements each
day.
The man who was driving the
car when it was shot tells KMBC that through the TIPS hotline, he is
putting together a $10,000 reward leading to the arrest and
conviction of those who shot Reece Good.
Good’s friend said the suspects were three Hispanic males with
shaved heads and were driving a dodge neon.
Anyone with information is
asked to call the Crime Stoppers TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
Update:
09/14/2006
We have more good news to share! Yesterday they removed the trach
and his IV. I'd say that is a pretty good sign he's getting better
and stronger when they begin to remove support aids that they had
hooked up to assist him. He got to start eating solid foods last
night. They are going to leave the feeding tube in for a little
while longer just to supplement him. They'll remove that when he
begins to eat 50% of his meals that they bring him. I don't think
he's real fond of the hospital food....but who is?
He's been working hard in therapy this week. He is talking much more
now and is even able to tell Heath things that he knew needed to be
done at the shop before he left for Sturgis. He's definitely still
got his memory. That guy is as sharp as a tack!!
They got him up a few times yesterday to a standing position. He is
definitely moving both of his legs, so they are going to try and get
him on the bars next week to see if they can get him started on
walking again. He is very determined to get better!
Thanks! The Good/Murray Family

Update: 09-11-2006
Hello! Just wanted to let everyone know that Reece has officially
been moved to the rehabilitation unit at KU. It is called the Olathe
Pavilion. He will be in therapy from 9am-3pm Monday-Saturday. No
visitors until AFTER 3pm on those days please. Reece needs to get
some rest during this time between his therapy sessions. Anytime
after 3pm or Sundays are open!
Thanks! The Good/Murray Family

Update:
09/08/2006
They are beginning to call Reece
"Superman" at the hospital. The doctors, nurses and
therapists are so shocked at how much progress he is making in his
recovery.
Reece started talking some on Wednesday afternoon. The speech
therapist was completely shocked that he was already talking when
she came to evaluate him. She was scheduled to start working with
him that day to see if he could at least make some sounds and he
just started talking. Typically speech is one of the last things for
a neurology patient to regain after an injury and surgery as
extensive as Reece's was. He obviously doesn't have the strength yet
to talk in complete sentences, but he will give you three or four
word answers to questions that you ask him. He still has the trach
in so it is a little hard to understand him, but that will get
better once they remove it. They will leave it in a little while
longer, even though he is breathing 100% on his own. They can't take
the trach out until they are sure he can breathe through his
nose.
They did surgery on his hand yesterday and he made it through that
just fine. They basically went in and put two pins in his thumb.
That is the only part of his hand that they were concerned about.
They are wanting to get started on some pretty intense physical
therapy now that he is aware and responding, so they may be moving
him to the Rehab floor today where he'll have his own room, etc.
It has been a long month for everyone. The days seem to be going by
much quicker now that Reece is starting down the road to recovery.
It is such a blessing to be able to share good news. We'll continue
to keep you posted. Thanks! The Good/Murray Family
Update: 09/06/2006
Great News!!! Reece is talking today!!!!!
Update:
09/05/2006
Reece is still showing signs of improvement. It seems he is doing
more as each day passes. He had a good weekend and a good (or as
good as can be expected) birthday yesterday with lots of visitors,
cards and gifts to help him celebrate.
The doctor said that Reece has fully regained consciousness! Yeah!!!
He is now shaking his head "yes" and "no" when
you ask him questions. He has smiled a couple of times, and is even
beginning to do sign language to communicate....he gave Alex
"the bird" yesterday when Al was teasing him about
something. I am pretty sure that tells us he knows exactly what is
going on!!
They are continuing with his physical therapy and he seems to be
making progress with that. They are going to hold off on operating
on his hand for awhile. The neuro surgeon wants to get his brain
healed up a little better before they do anything else. The surgeon
has told us that he likes what he is seeing in terms of the things
that Reece is doing and his progress.
I think all of the prayers are paying off! At first we all prayed
that he would just make it through, then we prayed he'd wake up and
regain consciousness....now we can continue to pray for him each
week to make progress towards a full recovery and return to the same
quality of life that he knew before this incident.
Nothing gives us more pleasure as a family than to be able to share
good news about Reece. The support that you all are continuing to
give Reece and our family hasn't gone unrecognized. We truly
appreciate everything! The Good/Murray Family
Update:
9/01/06
Well it's been three weeks....and we feel like Reece is showing some
very good signs of improvement this week. Over the last couple of
days he has definitely been awake alot more and had his eyes wide
open. He recognizes people when they go in to see him as well as
subjects that they discuss with him i.e. names of friends &
family, his shop, etc. Heath went in a couple of days ago and told
him that he was keeping the shop going and that they'd been working
on some handle bars and Heath said that Reece opened his eyes wide
up and Heath could tell that Reece was comprehending what he was
talking about. He will squeeze your hand now when you tell him to.
The nurses have asked him to give them a "thumbs up" a few
times and he's actually given the a thumbs up. I think they are cute
nurses... maybe he's flirting with them!
They started him on some physical therapy yesterday and he is doing
some stuff pretty good and other stuff he isn't able to do yet. They
asked him to push against them with his leg and he was actually able
to do it. He does still have a few blood clots in his legs, but they
aren't as concerned about those as they have blocks in to keep them
from going anywhere. He does have one in his arm so they are giving
him blood thinners.
The doctor told us yesterday that he can tell that Reece is very
DETERMINED and if they had to guess...he will walk and talk again.
They obviously can't be 100% sure. We are very pleased with his
progress this week. It has really boosted our spirits!
Hang with us....we've still got a long road ahead! Have a great
& SAFE holiday weekend! THe Good/Murray Family
P.S. Reece's bday is Monday, Sept. 4-- Be sure to say a birthday
wish for him!!
Update:
08/30/2006
Reece seems to be gaining a little strength this week. He is opening
his eyes a little more and keeping them open for longer periods of
time. He is following some movement and is moving his right arm up
and down some. On occasion he is squeezing people's hands when they
tell him to. He is still "in and out" and isn't fully
aware yet. They had been giving him a little sedation medication
over the weekend because they said his body was
"storming", he was tensing up and his heart would race.
They say this is typical in head injury patients and it might go
away in 3-4 days or in 2 months. It doesn't happen all the
time.
He has been running a fever off and on over the past week or so and
they have found a slight infection around an appartus that they have
in him to monitor his heart, etc. so they've changed his antibiotics
to fight this infection and the fever seems to be subsiding slowly.
He's got a couple of small blood clots in his legs so they have
started him on a blood thinner. They still have not operated on his
hand and won't be able to do so while he is on the blood thinners.
Many thanks to those that came out to the BBQ & Auction on
Sunday. Wow...I can't even put into words all the energy and
enthusiasm that was going around that place and not to mention all
the hard work of several individuals. Such hopeful and caring
people. They are estimating a turn out of 1,500 people and approx.
$58,000 raised. Below is a link to a website w/ info. from the
event. I think they'll be posting pictures, etc. soon.

Thanks! Kim
Update:
8/25/2006
Just wanted to let everyone know that Reece's condition is still
about the same since my last email on Tuesday. He is pretty worn out
today as they've been letting him breathe more and more on his own
each day. He did pretty good yesterday breathing, but is exhausted
today from working so hard at it. They put the trach in and have
taken the breathing tube out. So it is easier to connect/disconnect
the oxygen when he needs it or gets tired.
He is still in a light coma and could possibly remain in this
"in and out" state that he is in for quite sometime,
possibly even up to 6 mos. the doctor said. Each head injury patient
is different and even though Reece has opened his eyes some this
week and has had increased movement the doctor says it is a good
sign that Reece is "in there" but just keeps reiterating
that there is still a long road ahead. They are trying to decrease
the amount of pain medication that they give him each day to see if
he'll become a little more aware.
We just keep telling ourselves to be patient with this
recovery.....it has only been 2 weeks. The body doesn't heal such a
tramatic wound overnight. We can't even begin to thank everyone
enough and show our gratitude for all the effort that has been put
into organizing fundraisers, donations, the continued support and
most importantly the prayers for Reece and our family. We hope to
see you all on Sunday - The Good/Murray Family
Update:
08/22/2006
We've seen some signs of improvement today! Reece is beginning to
respond to his name. He's opened his eyes several times today when
someone talks to him or says his name. The nurses say that this is a
very good sign. They say it will still be awhile before they
can say that he's fully regained consciousness. It is a slow process
in waking up...he won't just wake up one day and stay awake. He'll
have to build up strength to stay alert for longer periods of time
each day.
The nurses have started to tell Reece where he is and what has
happened to him. They are letting him breath on his own for short
amounts of time until they can tell he is getting tired and then
they hook him back up to the ventilator.
After several days of little to no improvement we think this is step
in the right direction! We hope that this is positive news for all
of you supporting Reece and this will continue to boost your spirits
as it has ours.

BAKE SALE THIS SATURDAY--BAKED GOODIES NEEDED!!
Nancy Embree and Tracy Rulon are organizing a bake sale at the
Gardner Price Chopper this Saturday, August 26. All proceeds going
to Reece's fund.
Anyone that wants to bring baked goods for the sale need to drop
them off at their table in front of the store any time after 8:00 AM
Saturday morning!! Price Chopper was already planning a hamburger
cookout that day as well for the public, so Nancy & Tracy have
agreed to serve the hamburgers and Price Chopper will be donating
proceeds from that to Reece.
Update:
8/21/2006
Reece's status hasn't really changed much over the weekend. They did
not do surgery on his hand on Friday, we are not sure when they'll
be doing that now. His CT scans are getting better each day. They
said this morning that more of the pressure has been relieved from
his brain and that he is still in what they consider a very light
coma. We kept the visitors down to a very minimum this weekend to
let him get some rest as he was beginning to get a little agitated
and his heart rate was jumping up and down. So we are going to try
and continue to let him rest and see if he'll regain consciousness
soon. The doctors are really wanting him to wake up.
Police
Investigating Whether Same People Were Involved in Three Shootings
Aug 17, 2006 02:37 PM CDT
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Authorities investigating the shooting of a
man on his way home from the Sturgis motorcycle rally said
Thursday that the same people may have been involved in two other
shootings in the city on Saturday and Sunday.
Reece G. Good, 36, of Gardner, Kan., remained hospitalized
Thursday in critical but stable condition.
He was riding in a truck with two friends early Friday morning
when three people in another vehicle fired shots at their pickup
as they left a gas station near Interstate 635 and Kansas Avenue.
At least five bullets hit the truck.
Then, on Saturday, someone fired shots into a vehicle near
South 18th Street and Pacific Avenue. No one was injured.
On Sunday, a deli owner was shot in the stomach near South 14th
Street and Central Avenue. He remained hospitalized Thursday.
Three males were involved in that shooting.
"I would say the public should be very concerned, and you
need to be aware of your surroundings at all times until we catch
whoever did this," said Detective Randy Slater, of the Kansas
City, Kansas Police Department.
Kansas City, Kansas detectives were investigating whether the
shooting of Good was part of a gang initiation, because the three
people involved all had very short hair, possibly shaved heads.
Update:
8/17/2006
Reece is getting a little stronger each day.
He opened his eyes twice yesterday once in the morning and once in
the evening for a brief time. They have stopped giving him the
medication that was keeping him sedated and would like to see him
come out of the coma, which he is trying to do. They have been
seeing a lot more movement from him over the last 24 hours.
I think most of you know that he sustained a second gun shot wound
on his left hand and the doctors are wanting to go in and do surgery
on it again to see if they can get it where it will be more operable
when he recovers. If they don't, they've told us that his thumb and
fourth finger won't function well. They cannot leave the breathing
tube in much longer as it will start to do some damage, so they are
going to put in a trach. They are talking about doing these
procedures tomorrow. His doctor seems to think that Reece is strong
enough at this point to endure another surgery.

Update:
8/15/2006
Just wanted to let everyone know that things are still about the
same for Reece today. The doctor said that some of the pressure is
starting to be relieved from his brain which is good, but he still
has quite a bit of swelling. Even though he is making small steps of
progress things are still very critical. The doctor explained today
that he is still at a very large risk for blood clots or even a
stroke. They say that they are seeing signs that he is trying to
wake up. But it is taking so much of his energy right now to try and
do that. They are no longer giving him medication to keep him
sedated. He is initiating some small breaths on his own but they are
going to keep him on the breathing tube until he gets enough
strength up. They are still unable to tell us what the permanent
damage is going to be once he recovers.
POKER RUN - Some friends are putting together a poker run/benefit
for Reece. I'll have more information on that later this week when
they get the details worked out.
CARDS & FLOWERS - Reece is in the neurology ICU and in a very
small room so right now the only thing he can have in his unit are
cards. Please send cards to his home address below and we will make
sure that they get to him at the hospital.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
- So many people are asking what they can do to help. The family is
spending as much time at the hospital right now as possible. Gift
cards for the family to get a decent meal besides hospital
food every now and then would be helpful. There is an Applebee's,
Sonic, Dairy Queen and a Qdoba close to the hospital. I think
they've already got someone bringing food by to the house today, but
possibly could use another meal at the house this weekend or early
next week.
Reece is making small steps of progress each day because he's got so
many people pulling for him right now. As a family we can't express
enough how much we appreciate everyone's support and prayers, that
is what is keeping us going right now! I promise every email will
not be this long, I just wanted to get the information to everyone
the first time. I'll send something out every couple of days on his
status. If you know someone that wants to be added to the
distribution list please forward me their email or you can
definitely forward my messages on to others.
Keep fighting the "GOOD" fight! Many Thanks -
Kim

Update:
8/13/2006 11:23am
I have received calls from people who heard
Reece had died. They said they heard it on Channel 5
news, but this information
is not true. Jimmy called his family a few minutes ago
and he is still in the same
stable condition reported below.
Update:
8/12/2006
My son-in-law Jimmy Freeman is very good friends with Reece
and has been going over to the hospital to check on Reece's
condition. The latest news was good! He is responding to
some tests, like his eyes dilating when a light is shined, when he
is pinched, ect. He was shot once in the head and they are
leaving that bullet alone, and once in the hand which has been
removed. Reece is a great, well respected person in the biker
community and we are all pulling for him to have a speedy recovery
after this devastating event. Things like this just aren't
supposed to happen to the good guys!! Reece will need help
with his medical expenses so if you would like to help there is a
fund set up at the banks listed at the bottom of this article.
Please help as he is one of our own!! Spike

Shooters Target Men Heading Home After Motorcycle Rally

Aug
11, 2006 04:08 PM CDT
KANSAS
CITY, Kan. - Three men on their way home from the Sturgis motorcycle
rally became the targets in a drive-by shooting overnight.
One
of them - Reece Good, 36, of Gardner, Kan., - was critically wounded
and was fighting for his life in a hospital Friday.
The
shooting happened at about 3:15 a.m., just after the men pulled out
of a gas station near Interstate 635 and Kansas Avenue.
They
were in a truck with their motorcycles in tow when a dark colored
Dodge Neon pulled up next to them as they tried to make their way
back onto the interstate.
Someone
or some people - there were three men inside - opened fire on them
from inside the Neon.
The
driver suffered minor injuries. The other passenger wasn't
hurt.
Authorities
didn't know why they were targeted.
Police
were looking for the Neon involved. They didn't have any license
plate information.
Good's
family set up a fund to help cover his medical expenses. He
owns a custom motorcycle shop in Gardner, Ultra
Craft Customs.
